One of the benefits to Living in the Puget Sound Area is a 12 month fishery ...for both fresh and salt water species...

If you had your choice to live ANYWHERE.... ( money and employment-not an issue)...what city or town would you choose to live in for the benefit of an EXCEPTIONAL 12 month fishery for both fresh and salt water.....as a wade angler without a boat...
Thanks for your insight.

I live in Seattle and I can't complain about the opportunities around here. Exceptional? Maybe not within a 30 mile radius but all within 3 hours drive, one can find somewhat exceptional fishing year round.

The fellows on our local fishing Board will probably have me 'strung up' by my ankles for this but ... here goes. Medford, Oregon. From down town Medford you've got about 60 miles (up/down stream) of the upper Rogue river within a 60 minute drive. The closest 'place' (Tou Velle Park) is about a 15 minutes from 'City Center.'. Lake fishing? Huge lakes in the Cascade Mountains (and Emigrant lake just south of Ashland) all about 30-45 minutes away. Hell, in the winter you can hit the Rogue at day break for winter steelhead, pull off the river at 3PM and night ski on Mt. Ashland (abou t35-40 minute drive).

The Cascade Lakes are full of trout, Emigrant Lake has a large population of the same, but is better known for it Small Mouth Bass fishing. Should add, before I forget, all of these have excellent 'Public Access.'

Kitsap County. No rivers in the county but plenty within reach. Salt water fishing, still water fishing, lots of shoreline, a fair number of parks, smaller crowds than the bigger urban areas.

For year-around trout fishing, Redding CA would be hard to beat-pretty hot in the summer, but not far from Pitt River, Hat Creek, and the Trinity River, which are higher and cooler. The tailwater Sacramento below Shasta Dam is a year-around awesome fishery. You have the Smith and Klamath for steelhead. The Rogue is not far as well. Also, Klamath Lake and the Williamson and Wood are in striking distance as well. No salt water, but just about everything else! Rick

Good point(s) Rick. Forgot to add to my post above that all of the above are not much more than a 45 minute/hour-half drive from Medford....... bu, in today's economy, t I can't afford two State fishing lic.

Gotta say Portland. Best urban steelhead city. So much productive steelhead water. Trout on the D and other east side waters close to P-town, coastal cutts.

For smaller town living: Hood river or medford/Ashland. I'm in a process of deciding which of these to choose from when I move from here.

Rick-

You forgot the McCloud... for getting driven half insane before catching the fish of a lifetime (brownzilla)... and repeat...

For those of you who are ski bums, take a long hard look at Truckee, CA. It's on the river, in the mountains, and full of friendly people. Donner Lake, Lake Tahoe, upcountry lakes, reservoirs, not far from the Yuba, Sacramento, et al. OK, done plugging.

I like my hometown of Salem, OR. Hour+ to many coast destinations. Several small streams 30 minutes away (both to the west and east). Warmwater opportunities throughout the Valley. Couple hour drive puts you over the pass into Central Oregon. Steelhead every direction throughout the year. Salmon most directions throughout most of the year. Hour south is the McKenzie. Active clubs. Great fly shops. Couldn't ask for more (well, wouldn't mind some grayling and golden trout opportunities close by).
