Yak Canyon All BLM Campgrounds/Campsites Shut down

I just made reservations for our annual Yak River Camping in September.

I was surprised to find ALL BLM CAMPSITES IN THE YAK CANYON SHUT DOWN for the night/days of SEPT 18 AND 19, 2017.

I spoke with the very helpful Ranger and he told me we can still launch/retrieve drift boats on those dates but no camping and no picnicking. The reason is they are hiring a contractor to spray invasive "Russian" weeds on those days.

I assume it's Russian Knapweed.

I'm also surprised that they would wait to spray until the plants are full grown for the season as it's much more effective in the spring on juvenile plants.

Not to mention that the knapweed has bloomed and gone to seed by September ....

interesting, looks like central and eastern wa is prime habitat for this gnarly invader.

My parents "hired" my brother and I for the summer, pulling knapweed out of a 100 acre horse pasture. I hate that nasty weed! I still have flashbacks.

Yup, in alot of places they rate right up there with brook trout.
