Has this topic been brought up in here yet regarding genetically modified fish?

What are your opinions? Is this really that bad of a thing? Whats the difference between that and hatchery fish. It seems like the biggest argument people have are there not natural. Well..... Hatchery fish really aren't that natural either are they.

Will it also be accepted by the people when they start mass genetically modifying the human race? It will be presented in a way to reduce medical costs with no pre-disposed disease genes, a populace of tolerant/subdued individuals (minds) so little need for police/prison space, etc. The billions it will save, and the people will buy it. Really heading for a hell-hole of no return. Yes it is a bad idea! IMHO

This is in the news because the FDA just approved these fish for human consumption in the U.S. The problems I have with GM Salmon are (1) they aren't going to identify it as a GMO when they sell it, and (b) they can reproduce in the wild.

The originating fish will be bred in Canada in a indoor pen separated from all natural bodies of water. The females - supposedly triploid mules - will be shipped to closed pens in Panama. The fertile males and females will remain in Canada.

That's all well and good until some minimum wage employee thinks that these fish would be perfect in their favorite river.

From the application to the FDA, and proven by FDA researchers, the males and fertile females can reproduce with wild fish. I'm going to do this from memory, but I believe the FDA application states that reproductive success rate for hatchery fish in the wild is abut 94%, and the success rate for the GM salmon is around 4%. It's low for these GM salmon because they don't develop the physical characteristics of a wild fish in spawn (the males don't develop hooked jaws).

I have a third problem, now that I think about it: I cannot think of a single thing that humans have ever successfully contained...
