Curious if anyone has this reel and how it has performed. Ive held it and was impressed by the looks and also the reasonable price. Having never owned a Hardy, I'm big on Hatch and Galvan, but open to all thoughts and opinions. It would be used on 9' 5wt Whispercreek for trout, carp, bass, and baby tarpon. Thanks in advance!

Excellent trout reel. Wouldn't trust it in the salt. I notice the drag is effected slightly when wet- a quick adjustment is needed on mine after a dunk. No biggie but i imagine it isn't sealed and could be touchy in hot salty climates. I still think its a winner though.

I have a 4000DD and I think it is a pretty nice reel. It is machined well and the design is good with a narrow large arbor spool. Depending on how you like your reels to balance the rod you might consider the 5000DD for a 5wt. The 4000DD is pretty light (which to some is a good thing - I just like a little more heft so I am not working to keep the tip up all day).

Don't have the 4000dd but I had a 7000dd on one of my switch rods and thought it was an excellent reel for that price point. The only thing I didn't like was the arbor was so huge it made it difficult to finger the line when holding the rod (I like to pinch the line to cork handle when swinging flies). I assume that's not an issue with the smaller 4000dd though.

I'll second the thought that you might want to go with a 5000DD. The 4000 balances my 9 foot 4 wgt Zenith perfectly, the 5000 does the same with the 9 ft 5 wgt Zenith rod.

I used the black 6000 Friday. I got a 19" brown in some strong current, and the drag was perfect. I was able to put the perfect amount of pressure with very little effort. I like it so much that I got a 5000 for my 5wt rods and my 10' 4wt - a replacement for my broken piece of shit Greys GX700.
