See, that's what I thought too, but then I looked at Ross' schematics more closely. The pre-1998 spool they picture has no screws on the inside and two pins. The post-1998 spool they show has two screws and two pins.

My spools have three screws and one pin, so they don't look like either of the two options Ross has pictured, There are two versions of the pre-98 Gunnison, one with white lettering painted on the back of the reel and the earlier version with the lettering engraved but no paint. I know that these two spools don't fit my pre-98 Gunnison (the earlier pre-98 with the lettering engraved, no paint):

Here's a picture of the newer pre-98 Gunnison with white lettering I found online. I can't find a picture of the back of the spool on this version to be certain, but by process of elimination, I think my spools go with this version:

Does your pre-1998 Gunnison have white painted lettering or engraved lettering? And does the back of your spool have two pins and no screws, or one pin and three screws? Since it's not the post-98 reel, it can't be the one that has two pins and two screws. If your pre-98 G-1 has white lettering, I'm pretty sure we've found a match.

Appreciate the additional info, thanks. It looks like there's a third version of the pre-98 Gunnison out there as well, and at least two of the three have interchangeable spools.

Thanks Norm, this is very helpful. According to Ross, my spools are the pre-1994, "wide grooved" version.
