Feel the burn Cougs!

This is not off topic because coach F. is a serious, albeit great fly fisherman.

Most football programs make money. ANd if that was the case why don't they have nice basketball facilities. Unless they just built some which I don't know about (which is likely the case).

1. North Carolina (46) 7-0 1,770
2. Memphis (21) 6-0 1,716
3. Kansas (2) 7-0 1,632
4. Texas (2) 7-0 1,548
5. Georgetown (1) 5-0 1,529
6. Duke 8-0 1,422
7. UCLA 7-1 1,370
8. Washington State 7-0 1,355
9. Michigan State 6-1 1,093
10. Tennessee 7-1 1,004
11. Marquette 5-1 959
12. Pittsburgh 7-0 928
13. Butler 7-0 892
14. Louisville 5-1 878
15. Indiana 6-1 811
16. Texas A&M 7-1 781
17. Gonzaga 7-1 574
18. Clemson 7-0 570
19. Oregon 6-1 556
20. Brigham Young 6-1 371
21. Xavier 6-1 338
22. Arizona 5-2 224
23. Vanderbilt 7-0 173
24. USC 6-2 161
25. Villanova 5-1 152

Only Xavier is as small as GOnzaga but makes up for it as a pretty prestigous school.
I'm not ripping on the Zags, they buck the system and are still great.
I just wish I knew how they do it.

I think Coach Few is the primary reason for the Zags success. Coaching reminds me a little bit of the Renegade dry fly-the front hackle represents coaches like Few that conduct their business with class and dignity. The rear hackle down near the rectum end is represented by guys like Bobby Knight.(Another fly fisherman) If I were a talented recruit there is little doubt which one I would want to play for.

A lot of kids really, really want to play for Gonzaga so in the end cherry picking the very most promising ones is not that difficult. This year's freshman class is a good example with talent that should be exceptional two or three years from now. Ive

He also gets kids that are there for 4 years (Morrison excluded). He is an excellent coach. The players leave much better than they come. Over the course of their 4-5 years he has a chance to coach 'em up a bit.

Ive is right Bobby Knight does resemble the ass end of something.

Bob Knights former players come out of the woodwork to say that he made them better men. THat they came to college with huge egos and he changes all that. THere isn't enough of that in college athletics.

So, I guess my question is...how does he get this talent? Is it overlooked talent? I mean, Gonzaga doesn't have certain things great D1 prospects are going to look for in their glory years. Certain schools are easier to recruit to that others, and gonzaga doesn't have any of the characteristics of a school that can recruit.

O.k., a serious answer.

Few is really a genius who happened to fall in Gonzaga's lap. He is probably the best head coach in the country. It’s not so much he's an outstanding recruiter, but rather he knows how to recruit the right people for his system, as well as integrating players into it in a short period of time. He makes players better and gets them to plug into the system as a team, which is rare and special these days. The other key factor is success. Simply put: the more success you have as a program and the more players you put into the pros, the more attractive you are to special high school players.

Sloan,

With regards to coach Knight, there are also scores of people he has abused verbally and physically inside and outside of his program. There is far too much of that in college athletics. I personally would not let the man anywhere near any member of my family. I suppose it's the classic two sides to every story.
To answer your question about Few, he doesn't get "great talent" generally. Gonzaga's players don't jump through the roof or get drafted in the first round (Morrrison excluded), but they are good players that he helps make into great teams.
His teams are able to play multiple defenses and generally he has excellent point guards. Gonzaga forwards usually shoot well and play well without the ball. That seems to be the formula as I see it.

Way to go Cougs! That's tough to say for a rabid Zag fan. Here's hoping they give the UW the same treatment once the Pac 10 starts play. I'd love to see a rematch in the NCAA's.

GU's program changed in the very early 1990's when Dan Monson, Few and Bill Grier roomed together as assistant coaches, they decided they were tired of being an average mid-major and started putting creating a plan. Fitzgerald, the coach at the time, thought they were nuts and retired soon after.

I think it's simply a matter of them appealing to kids who are realistic enough to understand the odds of going to the NBA are very low for all but a few and that they have a chance to be part of a successful team and get a great education. Combine that with great coaching & a school that's nuts for them and that's how you get a Matt Bouldin, Austen Daye, etc away from UCLA & Kansas.
